“Believe that a song can change the world”.
For Wideawake, the Austin-based power-pop/rock five-piece, this was the underlining mantra hanging in the air of the group’s recording studio. Each thump of the bass drum and each tingling guitar chord resonates with the thoughts of inspiration; of turning pain into an element of hope, of encouragement. In short, it’s music to make you feel alive. This is the blueprint for Wideawake, a band mastering the ebbs and flows of triumphant contradiction. With a weaving of pop and alternative rock, they turn loss into optimism, sorrow into hope. And with their label debut Something That We Can’t Let Go, Wideawake has been able to fully translate that message in the group’s own music. After twelve years as a band and two years spent working on the album, Wideawake has garnered their own sort of triumph. After moving to Austin from a small northwest town, the group learned how to be a rock band in the smoky confines of Texas venues. Wideawake has parlayed the trials and rigors of the musician lifestyle to this very moment. The platform has been set, and Wideawake comes prepared with climaxing choruses, pain-strained vocal lines, and breathtaking crescendos.
Recorded with CJ Eiriksson (U2, Blue October, Matchbox Twenty, Jack’s Mannequin), Something That We Can’t Let Go is the pinnacle of the band’s career. It is both accessible and challenging, an effort in facing the roughest patches of life to bring out our best. Tracks like “Higher” and “Stay” shine with gleaming choruses and driving guitars, reminiscent of a more powerful version of contemporaries The Fray or a modernized Matchbox Twenty. The ambitious “Maybe Tonight, Maybe Tomorrow” is the most poignant of the band’s offerings, dabbling in acoustic minimalism and a stirring climax. The track’s proceeds have all gone to support another Austin inspiration: The Lance Armstrong Foundation
The group’s sensibilities attain a personal connection while reaching for something bigger, something more epic than the everyday. “We all need something bigger than ourselves to hold our heads high” croons Leger, reaching an assured epiphany on “Bigger Than Ourselves”. In doing, Wideawake reminds us that faith in a better tomorrow is justified.
With this personal connection in tow, it makes sense that Wideawake’s sound has served as the backdrop for Scrubs, Grey’s Anatomy, Freedom Writers, CNN, The Real World, and Dawson’s Creek, amongst other programs. This connection has also transitioned to the stage, where the band has performed with the likes of Switchfoot, Blue October, and Sheryl Crow.
After twelve years of being one of the best unsigned bands in the world, Something That We Can’t Let Go has set the platform to expand on Wideawake’s already-devoted fan base. Whether the band’s infectious, emotive music can change the world remains to be seen. But rest assured that it can connect with something universal within all of us, inspiring us to find the things worth searching for.
"iTunes Aid’s Armstrong’s Foundation After learning of a friend’s cancer diagnosis, Scott Leger of Austin-based band Wideawake wrote “Maybe Tonight Maybe Tomorrow”. Now he is donating the proceeds from the song’s sale to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Armstrong, who also hails from Austin, heard the song and went to iTunes, which is now featuring the tune. Furthermore, iTunes agreed to donate 100% of the proceeds from download sales of the song to Armstrong’s foundation."
"If you were listening closely last night to the Tonight Show band, the music they were playing
when Lance walked out was a song called “Maybe Tonight, Maybe Tomorrow”. The record is by Austin-based Wideawake, which joined with Armstrong to raise funds for charity. Every time the song is downloaded from itunes, the money goes to Lance’s cancer fund. Wideawake won the Best Pop Band title at the South by Southwest music festival for three years in a row. That’s probably
why they’re still unisgned: too successful! And you wonder why the record business is in the toilet."
"...an ambitious Austin Rock band that won 4 local music awards in March...if their live show is anything like this album, they kick ass. Along with catchy original songs and hooky melodies, the stars are aligned for a major breakout."
“…even a casual listen to the band’s Not So Far Away reveals that these Wideawake guys
know what it takes to make pop records: huge, jangling guitars, great harmonies, steroidal rhythms and huge measures of that sensitive-guy factor. The tunes area smart and sensitive…this is anthemic power-pop with great hooks, owing almost as much to Nirvana as to old-school bands like the Plimsouls, and its radio-friendliness is undeniable.”
- Singer/songwriter Leger recently won the ISC (International Songwriting Competition) Grand Prize for his song "Maybe Tonight, Maybe Tomorrow." The song was selected from almost 15,000 entries from 88 countries, by a panel of judges that included Tom Waits, Brian Wilson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Macy Gray, and Robert Smith of "The Cure."
- Wideawake were Austin Music Awards winners in '04,'05,'06, including Best Rock Band, Best Pop Band, Best Songwriter, and Best Male Vocalist
- Wideawake's two independent releases have sold a combined 30,000 units.
- Wideawake’s songs have been heard in a variety of television and movie properties over the last two years including Scrubs, Greyʼs Anatomy, Twitches Too-Disney, GridIron Gang, Freedom Writers, Dawsonʼs Creek, The Ring, Tristan and Isolde, The Real World, Road Rules, CNN, Making the Band,, Ghost Whisperer (twice), and the NBC Movie of the week: Critical Assembly
- Wideawake also perfromed on an Armed Forces Entertainment tour in 2006 which took them to Korea, Japan, Okinowa, Guam and Hawaii to perform for our servicemen.
